An old-growth western red cedar perimeter wall detailed to last a century with minimal maintenance.

A long cedar wall of horizontal boards on a concrete base

A study in material longevity. This old-growth western red cedar wall around a private residence was designed and built to last a hundred years. Because the wood is so valuable, each piece was selected by hand, and details such as water-shedding joints and surface treatments were chosen to extend its life. Connection points were kept to a minimum so individual boards can be repaired without disturbing the whole wall.

Patrick Danielson worked on the detailing and construction of the wall with Dennis Williams Construction, before founding DAO.
