Volcano Museum

A competition entry with a compression-ring roof and turf-bearing panels, inspired by Iceland's turf houses.

Reykjahlíð, Iceland Competition entry 2019
Rendering of a low turf-covered building in a grassy volcanic landscape

Submitted to Buildner's Iceland Volcano Museum competition in 2019, for an information centre and exhibition space near the Hverfjall volcano.

The design takes its cue from the dormant volcano. A compression-ring roof supports leaning, turf-bearing panels anchored at their base by surrounding stone, recalling Iceland's traditional turf houses. Inside, a geothermally heated central space offers year-round shelter, and its concave form spreads natural light through the open interior.
